Paradigm Learning’s choice of the owl as our symbol has its roots in ancient Greek mythology. The owl is the bird of Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom and favorite daughter of Zeus, best known for her embodiment of reason, strength and wisdom — and for “assisting others on their heroic journey for self-mastery and understanding.”1 Throughout the Greek world, the owl appeared in countless representations, ranging from sculptures to coins. Because of the latter, owls often took on the added symbolism of prosperity. In other cultures, the owl has been known as a wise animal for its nocturnal vigilance and often likened to the studious scholar or wise elder. In the Native American culture, owls are even linked with supernatural knowledge.2 The owl's roots in mythology and folklore are strong.... making it, even today, a very widely recognized symbol of knowledge and wisdom.
